Must see!

Who doesn't love that vintage feel?!

Over at acejet, they were sent a lovely penmanship book with beautiful vintage covers. Authentic vintage too, because they are from circa 1970!
While I do pride myself on my penmanship, I would still love to get my hands on this and try out some new styles. Check it out!

Creative process for my first cover design

Hey there crazy kids and groovy grown ups!

So I made my first cover for Vox this week, or at least my first attempt at a cover. The story was a photo essay about a girl with spina bifada, and there were some really great photographs. Mainly I felt like a photo editor, trying to pick the best photos for the cover and the opening spread of the story was really difficult because there were so many fantastic photos (it's an amazing story overall, definitely check out the multimedia on Vox).

At first, I was really drawn to this photo:

I chose not to use it because while I really love the color, I didn't feel that it introduced the story well enough and it didn't show any faces. This was the photo that they ended up using, so I kicked myself for not choosing it.
I also thought about this photo, but again no faces, and ultimately chose not to use it because Vox used a similar photo for their cover about two weeks ago.

I ended up going with this photo for the cover photo (Although this isn't my final draft). I feel like this photo shows a very intimate moment between mother and daughter. And I didn't just want it to be the daughter on the cover, because the story was really about the parents and their struggles raising their daughter.

Here is the final cover. I think I could have done something more dynamic with the typography. It was a big concern however, not to have the type break the subject's eye line.

Here's the opening spread. Like I said before, it was difficult to choose a photo for the opening spread because they all were great photos. I liked this though, because it showed her face looking at her mother's standing feet, which is something she'll never be able to do. I also felt it was appropriate with the headline, "the next steps."

These are the second and third spreads of the 6 page story. I realize now that I left far too much room for captions, and could have moved the photos apart to give them more room to breathe.

Photo inspiration of the week

Found this hard cider called Original Sin, and fell in love with the logo. First you see the initials, then the incorporation of the snake and apple theme. Brilliant!
